What is the difference between PR and Corporate Communications?
Q. I am going to college for corporate communications, however there isn't a writing course for this major. I am thinking about taking a writing course PR Writing, even though it will not go towards my degree plan. I know that all of this is under the liberal arts umbrella, but I feel the need to learn a skill. However I am also vague on what corporate communicators actually do on a daily basis. I've already taken a basic PR course and my thinking is that there are similarities. But I could be wrong. Can anyone recommend professional CC organizations I can talk to?

A. Public relations people usually issue either verbal or written statements (always something that will make the company look good) Corporate communications are more tailored to business communications.

A. Sounds good, as long as u do the required med school prereqs and do well on ur MCAT. (the more bio courses u take the better) If you want think of doing a double major or major-minor.

How can I cancel an account with Charter Communications from abroad?
Q. My dad and I are living in Germany and he wants to cancel his Charter Communications because he's paying $80 a month for it even though he's not using it. He tried having someone back home do it for him but they wouldn't allow it. He was told he had to call the 888 number but he can't call. Is there an email address or another number he can use to contact Charter? Is there a way to do it online?
Asked by Sorcha - Tue Jun 30 05:18:17 2009 - Other - Computers - 1 Answers - Comments
A. As far as I know the only way you can cancel is over the phone or in person. You can try doing the chat on charter.com, because they ask for the same info as over the phone does, but the only problem with that is they'll be concerned about the security of your information.

You can do any of a number of things in production, pre-production, and post-production. Lighting, directing, producing, music videos, corporate media, broadcasting. It's really hard to come up with a list because there are just so many ways you can take it. Radio, television, film, music production... What are some career opportunities available with a Communications Degree?
Q. I am going to school majoring in communications. I know that there are several different paths I could go down, being that a communications degree is so broad. So I was just wondering what suggestions people might have? I also like journalism but haven't really declared it as my minor or anything, I don't really know if it would help with a communications major. Any suggestions of successful career paths? I also live in Michigan and was considering applying in cities out of state as well, does anybody know of any cities that would be good for jobs within communications? Thanks!

A. Communication and public relations specialists held about 243,000 jobs in 2006. They are concentrated in service-providing industries such as advertising and related services; health care and social assistance; educational services; and government. Others work for communications firms, financial institutions, and government agencies. Public relations specialists are concentrated in large cities, where press services and other communications facilities are readily available and many businesses and trade associations have their headquarters. Would a major in communications be good if I want to become a buyer?
Q. Ideally, I want to do advertising/buying something of that sorts for retail corporations. I am trying to get into the communications department in my school and am planning on double majoring in communications and sociology with a possible sales certificate. What would make me stand out more? A minor in anything?! Does this seem like a good route? Advice please. Thank you!
Asked by Anonymous - Tue Nov 22 03:05:30 2011 - Higher Education (University +) - 4 Answers - Comments
A. Communications would be good, however, Marketing, Business Management, Commerce, or Accounting would be better. You need to be able to determine if what you are buying is at a reasonable enough cost that with a markup you will still be able to sell enough units in order to be profitable. You need to understand business life cycles, supply and demand, margin, loss ratios, etc.

What are the differences between journalism and communications?
Q. i want to study journalism in university and "communications" seems to come up a lot when i do research. i'm assuming it's kind of similar, so i was wondering what are the similarities and differences between them because some universities i'm considering don't offer courses in journalism but do in communications. i'm also wondering weather the job opportunities they both offer are the same? if i wanted to be a journalist or a reporter or a TV presenter etc, would it be okay if i studied communications but not journalism? Thank you.
Asked by Your - Tue May 24 16:05:31 2011 - Media & Journalism - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Most journalism training programs are contained within communication studies programs. Read the course and major descriptions on their websites and in the university catalogs. Most programs want the journalist to not just study how to be a journalist, but consider the larger questions and issues of communication systems/mass media in society so that they might be responsible journalists, see through staged events and propaganda put on by the government and others, and know that they will face barriers to serving their watchdog role on government and business while employed in the corporate newsroom.

What careers are available for a communications major?
Q. I'm majoring in communications with a concentration in media. I was wondering what careers would be available for me. I'm aware that television and radio are two obvious choices, but what else?
Asked by Jonathan H - Fri Aug 29 12:46:38 2008 - Higher Education (University +) - 1 Answers - Comments
A. TV and radio, obviously, but also print media such as magazines, newspapers and etc.; web-based media, advertising, film, and public relations. It all depends on how you focus your courses, and importantly, on which internships and work on campus you do. I strongly suggest that you get involved in media on campus. Join the campus tv and radio stations, work for the newspaper, do media work for the clubs you join on campus (writing their press releases, for example). Once you have those sorts of experiences on your resume, you can use them to get an internship. And that internship, plus the work you did on campus, are going to get you a job when you graduate.

How can a communications degree be applied to a journalism career?
Q. I'm curious as to how being a communications major can be relevant to journalism. I am aware that communications can be applied to numerous careers, but since I would like to be a writer, I'm wondering how it would be applicable?
Asked by samscara - Sun Nov 1 20:32:03 2009 - Other - Careers & Employment - 1 Answers - Comments
A. One of the best ways to start a career as a writer is to simply write. The specific degree that you hold matters very little as you progress in your career. As someone who has an undergraduate degree in English, and started her career as a television news writer, I can tell you from experience that the most significant boost you can give your career right now is to stop worrying about the degree and start networking with people who can give you freelance gigs and/or a job as a writer. Put a portfolio together and just go after the jobs you want. What type of writing do you want to do?

What are some careers in the communications field that will be most likely to accept tattoos and piercings?
Q. I will be a communications major in college and really want to work with people. But, all the research I've done says that body mods aren't really accepted. Are there any other careers I could look into?

I would personally think that building and programming computers would be better than having a job WITH computers, since anybody can do that. Good luck to you both!
