An aircraft is a vehicle which is able to fly by being supported by the air, or in general, the atmosphere of a planet. An aircraft counters the force of gravity by using either static lift (as with balloons, blimps and dirigibles) or by using the dynamic lift of an airfoil (as with vehicles that plane the air with wings in a straight manner, such as airplanes and gliders, or vehicles that generate lift with wings in a rotary manner, such as helicopters or gyrocopters).

Objects which fly, but are not supported by the air, such as most rockets and missiles, are not considered aircraft. These types of vehicles use rocket thrust instead of lift as the primary means of overcoming the force of gravity. Other objects which fly by using aerodynamic lift, such as kites and Frisbees, can only be considered aircraft if they are used as vehicles. Ballistic flying objects such as arrows, bullets and artillery are not aircraft, because they do not use the air as their means for countering the force of gravity. Parachutes are not usually considered to be aircraft (although they may be) because they have a lift-to-drag ratio well below one, and thus fly extremely poorly. However, parasails and paragliders possess a much high lift-to-drag ratio and are nearly always considered aircraft. For an even more specialized case a rocket with wings such as the X-1, X-15 or the EZ-Rocket does typically function as an aircraft when it is flying in its rocket mode using aerodynamic lift, but would not if flown as a spacecraft outside of the atmosphere, and where it is therefore not supported by the air. So it is possible for the same vehicle to either count or not count as an aircraft depending upon its usage.

The human activity which surrounds aircraft is called aviation. Manned aircraft are flown by an onboard pilot. Unmanned vehicles are often called drones, remotely piloted vehicles (RPV) or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

When a turboprop aircraft lands and the engines are stopped are the prop blades hot to touch.?
Q. Or can they hold a static charge that may be dangerous. All aircraft when I was young had to have a earthwire attached when on the ground, especialy when refuelling.

A. No- they aren't hot to the touch and they don't hold static charge once you are on the ground. Some aircraft actually require that the engines be "turned" after landing to allow hot exhaust gases out of the engine (The Jetstream 41 Turboprop is a good example). After landing and shutdown, a crewmember needs to go out and rotate the engine by pulling the prop around several times. Aircraft in flight can build up static electricity. (Particularly when flying through heavy rain or wet snow). This static buildup can cause radio interference. To prevent this buildup, aircraft have "static dischargers" (also called static wicks) on the back edge of the wings and tail. Any static that builds up on the prop would be transferred to the airframe… [cont.]

What is the term for an aircraft's ability to accelerate while flying vertically upward?
Q. If an aircraft is flying straight up, and the aircraft is accelerating, is there a technical or slang term for this ability?

A. I agree that ballistic flight is completely unpowered, with only gravity and drag involved. Just because Goose said, "We're going ballistic Mav!", doesn't make it so. Could you be thinking of a Viking departure? I watch our F-15's and F-18's do that almost every day. Only aircraft with a thrust to weight ratio greater than 1:1 can do a Viking properly.

Where is the RAT on commercial aircraft?
Q. I see little triangular indentations on aircraft, often near the undercarriage. Does this mean that air can be directed to a turbine inside the aircraft if necessary? On this Wikipedia page ( I see that it is external. Upon closer inspection of those inlets I see that there is a small flap that seems to control the air entering the aircraft. Is that correct, and is there a switch for the pilot to control it?

A. RAT stands for Ram Air Turbine, it is basically an emergency device if the pilot has lost all generated electrical power from the engines, and in some cases it provides hydraulic pressure too, either directly or through an electric pump. They are there to basically meet the safety requirements since loss of all electrical power is considered catastrophic in some cases, and there cannot be enough reliability relying on just the engine generators, the probably of both of them failing is very very small, but not small enough to meet the requirements. The RAT is extended into the airstream only in the emergency . The RAT on the Global Express buisness jet is beside the nose gear wheel well. Hope this helps
