Air traffic control (ATC) is a service provided by ground-based controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and in the air. The primary purpose of ATC systems worldwide is to separate aircraft to prevent collisions, to organize and expedite the flow of traffic, and to provide information and other support for pilots when able. In some countries, ATC may also play a security or defense role (as in the United States), or be run entirely by the military (as in Brazil).

Preventing collisions is referred to as separation, which is a term used to prevent aircraft from coming too close to each other by use of lateral, vertical and longitudinal separation minima; many aircraft now have collision avoidance systems installed to act as a backup to ATC observation and instructions. In addition to its primary function, the ATC can provide additional services such as providing information to pilots, weather and navigation information and NOTAMs (NOtices To AirMen).

In many countries, ATC services are provided throughout the majority of airspace, and its services are available to all users (private, military, and commercial). When controllers are responsible for separating some or all aircraft, such airspace is called "controlled airspace" in contrast to "uncontrolled airspace" where aircraft may fly without the use of the air traffic control system. Depending on the type of flight and the class of airspace, ATC may issue instructions that pilots are required to follow, or merely flight information (in some countries known as advisories) to assist pilots operating in the airspace. In all cases, however, the pilot in command has final responsibility for the safety of the flight, and may deviate from ATC instructions in an emergency.

Although the native language for a region is normally used, the English language must be used on request, as required by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

How would I know if I like Air Traffic Control?
Q. What do you have to be good at to enjoy Air traffic control and do well? I've never done anything related to this so I wouldn't know what it's like. I'm a junior in high school. Just looking at different stuff i might be interested in pursuing after school. Thank you for your time:)

A. I love it.. but then again, I became a pilot and AT Controller outside the military. Take this into consideration... For the United States, AT Controllers became the 2nd highest suicide rate, trailing Accountant's by 5%. So, good luck with that. Edit: Put it this way... You'll be in charge of the pilot's navigation during IFR and his look-out during VFR ops. Plus, however many passengers' he has onboard. They say that the pilot is always the one to blame-- which is true, but the whole point of ATC is to be the extra eyes behind the PIC. You'll have to navigate and speak to any number of A/C inside your range of airspace. What I like to consider, "my range," is, "my airspace." Which is technically true, politically speaking. So, if… [cont.]

A. sorry but i have no idea.. but you shouldnt release balloons into the air becasue i read that birds flying in the air can pop them with their beaks and then the balloon skin gets stuck on the beak and they cant get it off and then the bird starves to death because they cant eat!! :[[ so dont do it!

what is the name of that air traffic control tool, a set of plastic plates with flight numbers on?
Q. The air traffic controler would arrange them in order of priority, and dispose of one once the flight is securely landed?

A. Strip holders sounds like the most plausible answer. The name when I was working "traffic" where called flight progress strip holders. 30 plus years ago at Centers, "Shrimp Boats" where used. These were clear plastic, small rectangular, with a diagonal edge on one end. When the computer went down, it was necessary to go from digitize radar to broadband radar. You then wrote on the shrimp boats aircraft call sign, assigned altitude, up or down arrows to indicate if aircraft descending or ascending. No arrows met aircraft at assigned altitude. If you every watch the X-files, at the very beginning they show a green screen with lines and the image of a hand sweeping across. The images are from broadband radar.
